Montague, “The Book mill: It’s basically a bookstore found in a charming place….pictures will speak by themselves…It’s a grist mill with waterfalls behind it. The bookstore’ motto is: “Books you don’t need in a place you can’t find.” This itinerary included the Book mill, French King Bridge and Turner Fall: Discovery Center.
I was truly amazed about how beautiful this place is. After my visit to the bookstore, I had lunch in the Alvah Stone, which is the adjacent restaurant with the waterfall view. There is also an art gallery: Sawmill River Art, where you can find paintings with the book mill motives. In the “turn it up” store, you will find movies DVDs, and some CD for music selection.
Some interesting facts about the Book mill:
- It’s in the National Register of Historic Place in Massachusetts.
- It’s considered one of the 19 beautiful bookstore you need to visit in the USA. In fact, Massachusetts is home of two of the most beautiful bookstore in the nation, the Montague book mill and the Brattle Book Shop in Boston.
I spent approximately 3 hours wandering around in the book mill. It’s just so a cute place to see. After that, I made a quick stop at the French King Bridge. It was a bout 15 minutes drive from the Book mill. The question you may have is what to see in that bridge? well, there is a gorgeous overlook of the Connecticut River. In summer time, the trees surrounding are green and in fall time it’s all colors! You can also do kayaking in the river and there is a boat that can take you for a trip in the river.
The sad story is that many people go to that bridge to commit suicide. I had a moment of pause when I was there…. I actually saw a woman throwing flowers and little toys into the water in memory of someone I guess. Just watching the scene made me feel sad and I had a “moment…”
An interesting fact about this bridge:
- It’s considered one of the most beautiful steel bridges in 1932 by the American Institute of Steel Construction.

Turner Falls: Discovery Center:
Just a few blocks away from the bridge, there is another magical place, Turner Falls. The main attraction is the Discovery Center. Inside, there is a small museum with a display of flora and fauna from the region. There was also a photography exhibition about diversity. In the back of the center, you can see the old mill complex, there is sidewalk for a bike ride or simply for a promenade.
I did this trip a year ago, and as I am writing this, I’m planning on repeating this trip again!
