New England has so many fascinating places and it is home to several historic houses. The House of Seven Gables inspired the novel written by Nathaniel Hawthorne in 1851.
The house formerly known as the Turner-Ingersoll Mansion, is located in Salem, Massachusetts. This city is very popular in October during the Halloween festivities and this house is a major attraction as the novel relates the house to the Salem Hysteria and the Salem Witch Trials of 1962.
The House of Seven Gables was built in 1668 and it does have 7 gables, chimneys and a beautiful garden overlooking the Salem Harbor.
Today, the house is a museum and visitor can tour it and learn its fascinating history. The house has narrow secret ladders that you can climb as long as you are not claustrophobic. The tourist guide will provide information about the house itself and Hawthorne’s life.
As an additional point of interest, the House where Hawthorne was borne is adjacent to the House of Seven gables. I believe it was moved from another location.
